Sandrine Lescourant’s shows all share a “signature”: they all feature collective work and demonstrate the unifying power of dance. Followng on naturally from her first triptych on human relationships titled Parasite, Icône, Acoustique and her quartet titled Raw, Blossom is built on similar foundations: togetherness, otherness and the power of “us”. The piece places a group of amateurs alongside five professionals: a dancer, a gospel singer, a slam performer, a beat boxer and a beat maker, who serve as both guides and partners. In waves or short bursts, alive with communicative energy, the group inhabits the space in movements of ebb and flow, to the beat of a drum or accompanied by live mixes. The group dance gives rise to “a little flow, a little groove”, then to a tidal wave: from warm-up to stretching exercises, from simple walking to rhythmic movement, artists and amateurs move as one from one end of the room to the other. It’s as if the heat emanating from inside their bodies circulates from the stage to the audience, who long to move as well. Everyone’s invited, and the dance floor is open !
